What is a Sweat Capitalist?
Sweat Capital is about shared risk and shared reward.  A
sweat capitalist is someone who works closely with a
company and takes a portion of their compensation in
the form of equity.  The company gets the benefits of
flexibility with their scarce resources while still being able
to get access to deep domain expertise with discounted
cash compensation.  By taking a portion of their
compensation in equity, the sweat capitalist, like the
venture capitalist, is attempting to diversify risk through
an equity or sweat portfolio.  In the sweat capital model,
long term bonds are normally formed as both client and
sweat capitalist have a long term incentive to ensure
each other's success.

The sweat capital model was developed by
Mark
Hoover,
President and founder of Acuitive back in
1996.  Mark's a very smart guy who is always in high
demand for his deep domain expertise.  Mark had a lot
of success in the first twenty years of his career and was
afforded the opportunity to work with start-ups that
needed his unique skills at a time in their life cycle where
he could have the biggest impact without depleting them
of their scarcest resource....their cash.  Over the course
of 10 years, Mark brought other like minded
ex-operating executives into Acuitive who shared the
same passion of working with a diverse set of
companies.  Acuitive worked with one hundred start-ups
during the 10 year span and enjoyed a fairly successful
number of
liquidity events.  Mark recently joined the
Woodside Fund as a Venture Partner.

Tom Garland formed ACT Venture Partners in
2006.Tom was a partner at Acuitive where he joined in
2001 from another sweat equity group known as the
Venture Operations Group (aka VenOps).  Prior to that
he spent 10 years in various business development,
product marketing and product management roles at
both start up and established technology companies such
as SGI, Apple and Mpath/HearMe which IPO'd in
1998.
